Exploring San Diego

This past week I upgraded from a D40 Nikon DSLR to a D80. There were a few reasons I upgraded. First, I wanted to be able to use older lenses and those lenses need an internal motor to auto-focus, the D80 has this. Next, I wanted a bracketing feature so I could do some HDR photos, the D80 does this as well.

So this past weekend, I went out to Coronado Island here in San Diego to take some pictures and this is what I ended up with:

Sail Away

San Diego on Ice

Lights to Coronado

Overall, I was pleased with the photos, very sharp pictures with fantastic colors. I even had a few people compliment how my photos turned out when they saw them pop up on my LCD screen. I must say, I am satisfied with my purchase.

Small World

So I am sitting here reading small is the new big and Seth Godin has a riff on Poilane my absolute favorite bakery we visited in Paris last year. I discovered Poilane on the Martha Stewart show, and made it one of my musts on our trip. They opened the have been in business since 1932 and are passionate about their bread. The quality of their product really speaks for itself when a majority of the local restaurants serve their bread. We were lucky to visit the first Poilane and sample some of the Punitions and pastries. Can't wait to go back, but for now will have to read about them and lick my lips in antcipation!

TMNT

So the only people I know that lived in the sewer were Donatello, Michaelango, Leonardo and Raphael (if you can count mutant turtles as people) but the Dasparkhotel in Linz, Austria looks too cool to pass up! lead isn't keen on the idea, but apartment therapy had a link a zillion years ago to Core 77, and how could you not want to stay in a place like this:

Located right on the Danube, Dasparkhotel is like beach camping without the tent. There are no restroom facilities so you have to be ninja like and use the public ones nearby (however, they do provide you with a map so you can locate them, ain't that sweet!) My favorite feature other than the design is Dasparkhotel (brain child of Andi Strauss) is the "pay as you wish" rate where customers leave a Euro amount that they can afford and with which they wish to support the project. Can we say score!?!

Piroshky Piroshky!

That little piece of flakey goodness is my idea of heaven. I was a piroshky virgin until lead and I went to Seattle this last January. And that is when we stumbled upon the renowned Piroshky Piroshky! I wanted to eat piroshkies for every meal but lead had to cut me off. Think Bourdain had this problem too. I wish our trip had been for more than a weekend so I could have sampled every flavor. I can't wait to taste how these little guys stack up to the piroshkies in Mother Russia.

Where my canoe skills will come in handy

One of the places I am really excited to visit is the Taling Chan Floating Market in Bangkok. It is located on the Khlong Chak Phra canal in Bangkok. Vendors sell their wares (fruit, vegetables, orchids, fish, etc.) from their boats and will bring it to you. Who needs Pizza Hut!? All I can say is gimme!!

I Lurve Carbs

As I mentioned earlier, I love fruit and veggies, however I have a special place in my heart for carbs (what girl doesn't?!) I never understood the whole chocoholic thing, give me a slice of bread or a slice of pie and I am the happiest girl in the world.

One of the things I am looking forward to the most while on our trip is eating some of my favorite foods in the places where they hail from. One of the foods on the top of that list would have to be naan bread. Our local tandoor makes some AMAZING naan. I love the crisp yet tender texture, and the richness from the ghee that is typically brushed over it. When we go to the tandoor we can't really see them make the naan, and I want to learn how to make it since I already know how to eat it! I am partial to the to the Kashmiri naan, its like the Indian version of the poptart, but better.

I am excited to see them made in person and eat them until I can no longer button my pants. lead you are going to have to roll me out of India!

Getting Our Hands Dirty

In my introduction post, I went on and on about how I love food but completely forgot to mention how I love volunteering. I think it is very important for me to help individuals that are less fortunate than myself, think of it almost as a duty. I think the whole mentality of service was drilled into me when I was a Girl Scout, and I haven't shaken it. So I volunteer at work sponsered events and I am an assistant Girl Scout leader. So when I came across this post on apartment therapy today, mye eyes lit up. We could volunteer on our trip! Volunteer globalization here I come! I checked out Globe Aware and they have programs during our trip in places we were interested in visiting. I would be hard pressed to pick just one and would want to volunteer at all of them. I am sure lead would veto it, it can be expensive but what an experience! I will have to make sure I pack my work gloves.

Defining the Teams

I am unsure if lead has expressed his love for food in his blog, but he loves it. He is a discriminating foodie when he wants to be but he has a soft spot for snacks of any kind (chips, cookies, popcorn, candy) He loves the gourmet stuff when he can get his hands on it, but he easily falls into the fast food and snack aisle and will leave only when he has to unbutton the pants. He also is a lover of all things meat, this is his idea of heaven:

And this is mine:

This makes dining together a little difficult, since I gravitate all that is fruit and veggie, and he wants anything meaty or fried. It's a difficult little tight rope we walk, but I bet it will be a little more difficult while we are bouncing around.

Introduction

Figured I would introduce myself, and let you know what my focuses (foci?) will be for our trip.

First and foremost, I LOVE food. I think that probably would be an understatement. I eat (hehe), sleep, and dream about food. I am a Food network junkie and tastespotting & foodgawker addict. So I am really going to spend as much time as I can discussing the unique cuisines and delicaces of where we are going to visit. And definitely cooking schools I am going to beg lead to take with me.

I also love design, art and papergoods. So I will try to wiggle that in somewhere.

I dream of this trip being like an episode of No Reservations, I want to get a sense of the culture and the people of the places we visit because that is how you truly get to know a place. I can't wait!

Bangkok Twilight

One of my favorite photos that I've taken. I took this in Bangkok, Thailand in 2006 while crossing one of Bangkok's many road overpasses. This photo also clearly shows the strength of a Thai traffic jam as well.

Tecolote Scribbles

Tecolote Scribbles

There is a ton of graffiti around Tecolote Canyon in San Diego. Some of it is just random scratch but occasionally there is something with a little more substance. Plus it is always enjoyable to take some colorful photos and make them even more colorful.
